Later that evening, Lottie knocked on Mrs Moore’s door after they had retired for the night. She told Mrs Moore about Lord Cavendish’s appointment while her employer sat at her dressing table brushing her hair.

‘That was quick thinking of you, Lottie, to have a look in his diary. I’m impressed you managed to find something of interest.’

‘But I don’t know if it’s useful.’

‘That depends on who he’s meeting, doesn’t it? It would be fascinating to know. Why’s he going to the trouble of meeting them at an old smuggler’s inn when there are plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants in Fernwood-on-Sea?’

‘Perhaps he doesn’t want to be seen.’

‘Yes, I think that could be likely.’

‘I’ll need to spy on him.’

‘Oh no, Lottie, that’s much too risky! He’ll see you.’

‘No, he won’t. I’ll hide outside the inn and see who turns up.’

‘How do you know there’ll be somewhere suitable to hide?’

‘We can visit beforehand.’

‘When is his appointment? Thursday? That’s the day after tomorrow. We have our boat trip with Captain O’Malley tomorrow, so perhaps we can venture down to Smuggler’s Cove during the day on Thursday. If we ask Miss Trent’s permission, Langley might drive us down there. It sounds like a charming little place.’

‘Apparently there’s a cave there which smugglers hid their contraband in.’

‘I can’t wait to see it!’
